How to join the RICS

There are two main types of RICS qualification – Associate member (AssocRICS) and Chartered member (MRICS).

You can enrol at any time in your career as long as you meet one of our eligibility requirements before applying for assessment. Student members can also begin their qualification process if they are on work placement as part of an RICS-accredited degree.

10+ years (5+ years if you have a postgraduate degree) & you need to be able to demonstrate you have advanced responsibilities for delivering specialist services
Academic Assessment
Relevant degree
3+ years relevant experience working in academia
MRICS Direct Entry
Membership of an RICS-recognised professional body
5+ years (experience requirements is dependent on the professional body qualification)

Once you have made an application RICS will check it to confirm that you have chosen the best route to membership for you.

RICS will email you more detailed information about the process, guidance notes for your counsellor and information about how to use our Assessment Resource Centre (ARC) website.

Senior professionals, specialists and academics

If your career has progressed based on seniority, specialisation or through academia, we have assessment routes to match your experience.

  • Senior assessment: you have 10 years of relevant experience (5 years if you have a postgraduate degree) and can demonstrate advanced responsibilities as a senior leader.
  • Specialist assessment: you have 10 years of relevant experience (5 years if you have a postgraduate degree) and can demonstrate advanced responsibilities for delivering specialist areas of work.
  • Academic assessment: you have undertaken academic activities relevant to the profession over a three-year period and hold a surveying-related degree.
